1668: Our Building was built by the Chorleys; a Puritan family, whose portrait hangs in the Harris. John Chorley went on to be the Mayor of Preston. The Plough Inn was first used as a Haberdashery (wool shop). The 3 different colours painted inside the glass represent 3 different spools of yarn.

1715: The Battle of Preston was fought and won right outside our ancient Inn. The failed Jacobite rebellion was an attempt to reclaim the throne for the Stewart’s. Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Young Pretender drank a version of this for strength and vitality prior to battle in the rebellion of 1745.

1732: Our building was owned by Lady Catherine Petre. She was the heiress to Lancashire’s richest family. A formidable women, who refused to be subjugated by her husbands. Catherine was an ardent Jacobite, and was one of the main proponents of the Catholic faith in the aristocracy, at a time of religious persecution

The Gin Craze of the 1700s - the great moral panic! By 1743 people were drinking an average of 2.2 Gallons of gin per year and there were 7000 gin vaults or dram shops in England. Right beneath your feet is the only surviving “Dram Shop” in the whole of the UK. Gin concoctions went by the name of ‘Cockolds Comfort’ ‘Ladies Delight’ and ‘Knock Me Down’.

The Plough Inn had a reputation as a ‘unruly house’ with reports saying it was ‘known to the police as a disreputable one’. In the election of 1796, voters were bribed here to vote for Lord Derby, with a week of free drink, food and dancing. The Plough has a history of distilling gin in the cellar, both legally in the 18th Century and illegally in the 19th.

Preston was a place of wild drunkenness in 1800s, but also the birth place of the Temperance Movement which fought to banish the scourge of drunkenness One of the founders of the movement, Thomas Swindlehurst, had his last drink here, declaring ‘CHEAT, DECEIVER, LIAR, THIEF. DEVIL THOU ART, I WILL NOT TASTE THEE AGAIN FOR TWELVE MONTHS.”

1913 The Temperance movement was rampant and the old pubs, inns and taverns were being closed down throughout the country. This was the year Plough Inn succumbed and had its licence revoked by magistrates. This is an ode to when it became a coffee house, which would then turn into a clock makers, fish & chip shop, carpet shop, vintage clothes & piercings and even Meeting Rooms for the Oddfellows.

2018 PLAU opened its doors, returning as an Inn after a break of some 105 years. Honouring its history, while celebrating the love for contemporary cocktails and craft beer. This is a combination of our bar staff’s favourite Cocktails. Negronis, Margaritas and Manhattans.
